I can definitely agree, but from the stand point of the Catering Director at one of the Metropolitan area hotels. After my client has had their tasting and made their selection, it is unfortunate that during the BEO meeting or the day of the event I have found that the client's selected item will not be served. (this has occurred on numerous occasions and at numerous venues where I have worked) The excuses are just unbelievable! And of course guess who the client voiced their disappointment to... ME! And yes I would make the recommendation to grant the client a monetary satisfaction. My argument is that the signed BEO has the specifics regarding the client's choices and when the client does NOT get what they paid for, they should be reimbursed. And with that said... Guess who is no longer in the hospitality career! (chuckle)

I don't like that "act of God" clause in the contracts that gets a client out of a contract if it snows or something else like that.

I can certainly relate to both comments. I sometimes take for granted that not everyone is experienced in planning meetings, and therefore doesn't know how to provide information or understand what the hotel needs to best service their group. So I certainly appreciate your comments.

I wish my hotel had that policy a few days ago. We had an extremely unorganized group in that "forgot" to send in their updated numbers. So their meeting was set for 70 when the new numbers were for 110. Thank god we had a bigger room available that just happened to be set for 110. I do believe we ended up charging room rent which was previously waived.

Charging the customer for changes made the day of the event used to be a common practice many years ago. Then when so many hotels popped-up and competition increased, it stopped. Good for the customer but bad for us banquet managers that needed to deal with the continual changes that kept on coming.

I definitely agree with about people having something memorable to say. I think with this instance there were simply too many speakers for a reception. They also probably could have focused more on getting people's entire attention rather than blazing through with the remarks hoping people would catch on. Potentially chimes could have helped introduce that something different was getting ready to occur.

People need to be polite and listen if they are at a event - but by the same token, people shouldn't be public speakers if they are not "listenable"...

I appreciate your comment Joe. For this particular posting, it was due to budget. But what's interesting is that I would never have chosen the venue to hold that type of meeting anyway. It was more so a banquet hall rather than meeting or conference venue. It also did not have any where people could sit to simply check your blackberry/voice mail messages.

So they were only looking at price. However, nowadays, hotels, etc. will do what they can to get you into the space given the economy so I do think this was a lost opportunity.

Your point of not enjoying the event because of space is well taken. I am considering just that in whether to attend the event this year given I know where it will be. The content is going to have to be a major draw to get me there.

Is it because people are cheap, or just don't want the hassle of finding a new place now that your plans have grown?
I do find it difficult to enjoy an event if people are crowded in, or forced to shuffle around because of space issues. It makes me less likely to spend money attending next time in fear of it happening again.

Thanks for the link, Jennifer! One issue I stress on The Eloquent Woman blog is that women have more "appearance issues" when they are speakers, purely because of the difference in their wardrobes, and the addition of makeup, jewelry, and hairstyles. There's more variety (and potential for pitfalls) for women speakers with these double-edged swords, a situation most men don't face, as their "professional wardrobe" is simpler and more codified. On the plus side: Women can dress in ways that enhance their visibility and get them more (positive) attention as speakers. I'm also struck by how many speakers don't think about how they look to the audience!
